Corporate Calls vs. #savetheunicorns

Three main differences to know before you nominate!

Our recent article outlined the three Corporate Matching categories that UBI Global members can participate in. These categories include Corporate Calls, #SaveTheUnicorns, and UBI Spotlight. While these two styles of opportunities might look very similar, there are three main differences between them. This article explores the differences in Corporate Calls vs. #SaveTheUnicorns and what makes each of them unique and great!

Loosely Coupled

In computer programming, ‘loosely coupled’ means individual services that don’t depend on others to move forward. In the case of corporate calls vs. #SaveTheUnicorns, it’s the best way to describe the main difference between the two programs. The #SaveTheUnicorns campaign is loosely coupled with the UBI Global framework while the Corporate Calls are not. While both are available, each has unique benefits – let’s explore.

#SaveTheUnicorns

When you click on a black and white #SaveTheUnicorns icon from the bottom of the Corporate Matching webpage, you are in unicorn land! Nominating startups in one of these opportunities will send your nomination directly to the corporate partner. From there, the corporate partner will get in touch directly with you and/or with the startup. These opportunities are loosely coupled with the UBI Global framework.

Corporate Calls

In the colorful icons at the bottom of the Corporate Matching webpage, you will find Corporate Calls for startup matching opportunities. Unlike their #SaveTheUnicorns counterparts, nominations submitted to these partners are verified and vetted by the UBI Global team. Members who nominate startups will hear from us with any questions or instructions for the next steps.

Is this always the case between corporate calls vs. #SaveTheUnicorns? No, in fact, there is a #SaveTheUnicorns partner right now asking UBI Global to collect your startup nominations for them. Innovation comes in all shapes and sizes, and so do our corporate matching programs.

Support Options

While Corporate Calls for startups are opportunities for sponsorship, mentorship, and other development activities, #savetheunicorns opportunities can include offers to work with new partners who will provide a discounted service, platform, or product to help startups achieve more impressive growth results.

The #savetheunicorns opportunities are available only to the UBI Global community and provide a path to success through the professional polish tools and resources so needed by startups, scale-ups, and even some small to medium size programs. Yes, you can #nominateyourself to #SaveTheUnicorns and access #lotsofopportunity! And, best of all, they are open to all membership levels! And speaking of that…

Membership Tiers

Levels of membership with UBI Global were explored in a recent article, which we invite you to read again. Making a stronger commitment to UBI Global involves an increase in cost, but the value that is added when increasing membership from Community to Pro or Premium is enormous, and the opportunity to nominate more startups for Corporate Matching is a huge value.

Community vs Pro vs Premium

It’s a new day. With the onset of a global pandemic, every part of the business world changed – rapidly. The UBI Global community is changing too, an evolution built on a benchmarked foundation of solid business practices and experience leading through times of challenge and change. For UBI Global, now is the opportunity to offer an enhanced, active Corporate Matching Program. This article outlines how a corporation meets startup through UBI Global Corporate Matching.

Corporate Matching by UBI Global

Our philosophy is simple; match corporate opportunities with startups around the world that are developing products, platforms, or services to form an impactful match between the two. With the new business climate, achieving this is even more results-driven for corporate innovation teams than ever before. To achieve the maximum impact on both sides, UBI Global has three main categories for Corporate Matching: Corporate Calls, #savetheunicorns, and UBI Spotlight.

Corporate Calls

Announced to our community as a ‘corporate call for startups’, corporate calls are driven by the corporate partner. Typically, these opportunities have definite criteria and technical specifications. Often, our corporate partner will choose to remain anonymous to save startups from intimidation or prevent competitors from swooping in.

#savetheunicorns

UBI Global members include more than 1,200 business incubators and accelerators located in over 90 countries worldwide. Membership in UBI Global is at the program level rather than a single individual. Programs must meet UBI Global’s criteria to qualify as a business incubator or accelerator and membership cannot be applied for by individuals. Though our members are sometimes run and/or funded by universities and corporations, these “parent” entities are not eligible for membership, but they are eligible for partnership, sponsorship, and other opportunities within our community.

What is #savetheunicorns?

In comparison, this program is more informal than Corporate Calls. The #savetheunicorns program sprang to life out of a need to make matches faster and easier between corporate partners and our community. Opportunities classified as #savetheunicorns are often directly linked to the corporate partner, not involving UBI Global beyond alerting our membership. Read more about the #savetheunicorns program in this article.

This article gave the basics of Corporate Matching with UBI Global and how members of our community are able to participate. Keep in mind that each corporate partner and opportunity is different, and we will accommodate just about any reasonable requirement or request.

For this reason, there may be subtle differences in what was described here. For instance, there is a #savetheunicorns partner that relies on UBI Global to gather the startup nominations on their behalf rather than provide a direct link, which we are happy to accommodate!

How to make the most out of the UBI Global innovation intelligence community

We’ve all been there – you join a gym or online group and it goes okay. But it’s not great. You feel like you should be more actively involved and reaping more of the benefits. It makes sense, but it can be overwhelming to jump in and investigate all that the group has to offer. We understand, so let’s not let that be your experience here! This article explains how to receive the maximum return from UBI Global membership and which level is right for your program.

What are the UBI Global membership levels?

Our community is among the best in the world at networking, benchmarking, and innovation. UBI Global members are responsible for some of the most impactful innovation on the planet – and we think that our services have made a significant contribution to this success. We know that not all members have the same resources and requirements, so we have right-sized our membership levels accordingly.

Community Membership

This level of membership is a great starting point to get to know the UBI Global community and all of the resources on offer, and it’s incredibly easy because it’s free! UBI Global membership at the Community level provides access to peer business incubators and accelerators around the world for engagement and collaboration as well as one startup nomination in the corporate matching program.

Community Membership benefits:

Pro Membership

This is the first paid tier of membership to the UBI Global community. To turn up the volume on engagement, benchmarking, and matching, Pro Membership offers huge benefits that go beyond joining for free. This level of membership is eligible for discounts on impactful networking events, granular assessment through the world-famous UBI Global benchmark study, and perhaps the most timely benefit – corporate matching.

Pro Membership includes the not-so-hidden gem of being able to match up to five startups per quarter with participating corporate partners. These startups can be graduates, scale-ups, or just getting traction – as long as they suit the individual corporate criteria, they are in!

So, to recap, the Pro Membership level includes:

Premium Membership

Premium Membership Level is the second tier of paid membership and the highest engagement offered by UBI Global to date. The Premium level includes all the great resources and engagement of the other membership levels, AND it goes even further. Deeper discounts, more impactful engagement, and the opportunity to include your program’s best and brightest startups for the corporate world to see.

Premium Members have the power to match as many as 20 startups per quarter through the Corporate Matching program. Premium Members are also able to participate in the bi-weekly startup promotional program that reaches more than 300 CVCs, VCs, and corporations seeking innovative partnerships. Premium Members enjoy more access to resources that improve their programs, increase the success of their startups, and provide evergreen benefits and opportunities to their innovation ecosystem.

UBI Global member programs that participate in the World Benchmark Study have demonstrated a very important trait; their startups are more successful. With a 5-year average survival rate of 59 percent, UBI Global member programs outperform non-incubated startups by 15 percentage points. The programs in the study supported ventures with over $3.2 billion in sales over the past five years.

Corporate Matching

In our experience, when times get tough, that’s the time to innovate! Through our Corporate Matching programs and the #savetheunicorns-initiative, we are encouraging our community to do exactly that – and providing a conduit to new partnerships.

Corporate matching with UBI Global takes the hunt-and-gather process out of the search for impactful collaboration – on both sides of innovation. UBI Global is facilitating impactful collaboration between startups, incubators, accelerators, and corporate partners every day.

Our approach involves outreach and promotion on both sides of our community. We provide direct links to corporate partners seeking startups with a specific focus, technology, or criteria. At the same time, we reach out to our Pro and Premium members to provide the details of their best and brightest startups and alert potential partners, mentors, and funding sources.
