UBI Global Announces Research Partners for the World Benchmark Study 2021-2022

The DMZ at Toronto Metropolitan University (Canada) and the SETsquared Partnership (the UK) have contributed expertise to the World Rankings Report

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN – Tuesday, January 31 – The World Rankings Report 2021-2022 of business incubators and accelerators was officially released by UBI Global during the World Incubation Summit 2023 Part 1 – as the result of the World Benchmark Study, now in its sixth iteration – representing public, private, university and corporate organizations from startup ecosystems around the world.

Incubators and accelerators are ranked using program impact and performance scores based on 21 key performance indicators (KPIs). The Study’s KPIs are based on seven subcategory scores, which feed into three main categories for evaluation: value for the ecosystem, value for client startups, and value for the program.

“The incubators and accelerators highlighted in the World Benchmark Study have met post-pandemic challenges with creative solutions to deliver a world-class portfolio of services,” said Ali Amin, Co-Founder of UBI Global. “Organizations continue to set the bar higher and continuously exceed the expectations of their respective ecosystems.”

Announced this year, the DMZ at Toronto Metropolitan University (Canada) and the SETsquared Partnership (the UK) joined UBI Global as official research partners to partake in the ranking and recognition process for the World Benchmark Study 2021-2022.

Both partners have achieved the #1 world ranking multiple times, and are now supporting the 2021-22 Study through the provision of research efforts and advisory services during the assessment and selection process. The DMZ and SETsquared are not eligible for ranking or recognition, given their new roles as partners in the Study.

“We’re proud to be partnering with UBI Global on an award that’s near and dear to our hearts at the DMZ,” said Abdullah Snobar, Executive Director of the DMZ and CEO of DMZ Ventures. “As a longstanding winner of UBI Global’s incubator ranking, it’s an honor to be working alongside UBI Global to recognize incubators and accelerators that are driving impact on a global scale.”

“The incubator and accelerator space globally has skyrocketed, fostering a solid support network for startups worldwide,” said Marty Reid, Interim Executive Director of SETsquared. “Highlighting the global network of incubators and accelerators — and its tremendous impact —  is essential to creating a strong and competitive startup ecosystem worldwide.”

Recognizing Excellence Among Business Incubators and Accelerators from the World Benchmark Study 2021-2022

Can you believe it has been 10 years since UBI Global began with a Swedish student who had a dream of mapping, benchmarking, and recognizing the performance and impact of university-led business incubators around the world? That one-time student, Ali Amin, became the Founder and CEO of what is now UBI Global, and this year marks the release of the sixth edition of what has become the gold-standard study of business incubators and accelerators worldwide.

The pandemic has changed the global innovation industry, much like it has changed the world of business in general. After studying the shifts made by business incubators and accelerators through the Triumph of Innovation impact study in 2021, the UBI Global research team felt ready to conduct this version of the World Benchmark Study for 2021-2022

There were a few changes to the methodology and the survey along with a shift to the time period that meant a smaller data pool, but thanks to our loyal members sharing their time, knowledge, and data, we are delighted to be able to announce another World Benchmark Study and World Rankings for 2021-2022 are complete and ready for release.

Understanding the World Rankings

Over the years, the World Benchmark Study has evolved to include many new benchmark categories that reflect the evolution of the global innovation community. What began as a fact-finding mission has grown to become the gold-standard study of business incubation and acceleration on a global scale. Consistently updated to reflect the latest research in the field, at its core, the underlying research framework has remained unchanged – the absolute impact and relative performance of a program are the two determining factors of success.

Benchmark vs. Ranking

When it comes to benchmark categories vs. ranking categories the determining factor is the level of focus. While the benchmark categories offer a granular view of the programs, ranking categories are a top-level view. We provide all participating programs with a scorecard infographic that offers an overview of their overall impact and performance relative to their peers.

Ranking categories and the respective top lists reflect differences in setup, funding, and focus between different groups of incubators and accelerators. Benchmark categories and ranking categories are two related outputs of the same data, with benchmark categories finely tuned according to the program’s self-definition

Presenting this Year’s Top Performers

As the benchmark has grown and expanded, it became clear that there was a need to compare like-for-like programs. The ranking system has evolved, moving from a focus on individual programs to a top-list system that spotlights performance and impact. This categorization sets the bar for the rest of the global innovation ecosystem in a fair and concise way.

For the sixth edition of the World Benchmark Study 2021-2022, 1895 programs were assessed to be part of the Study and 356 applications were received, leading to the ultimate 109 programs that were ultimately benchmarked. This resulted in Top Lists among four categories based on the sample size. Each ranking category has a Top List according to the size of the category:

Ranking Category and Top List

     >> Top University Business Incubator – Top 10

     >> Top Public-Private Business Incubator – Top 5

     >> Top University Business Accelerator – Top 3

     >> Top Public-Private Business Accelerator – Top 5

This list reflects a highlight of the groups of high-achieving programs, providing recognition to the group as a whole. Among global peers, these programs are all top performers! The Top Lists and Top Challengers will be announced during the World Incubation Summit Part 1 – Rankings & Recognitions online event on January 24, 2023. ESG Added to the World Benchmark Study

UBI Global, as a company known for its research and benchmarking, has been an active member of the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative’s association with the United Nations to provide rankings, ratings, and assessments interface as a guide to the academic sector and beyond. This work made us understand the importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance to investors and, therefore, our community.

For this reason, and to provide a baseline understanding of ESG to our community and stakeholders, the research team included a set of ESG assessment questions in the World Benchmark Study 2021-2022 for the first time. While this lens of the study does not result in a ranking, it will certainly enable us to highlight impact-makers and early adopters of ESG initiatives around the world and share this information to further our community’s knowledge and strategic planning.

The Importance of Digital Services to Business Incubators and Accelerators

A World Benchmark Study 2021-2022 Preview

Thanks to participants of the Triumph of Innovation impact study we conducted last year, the UBI Global research team was given some great stories of digital transformation as told by our community of business incubators and accelerators. When we conduct this year’s World Benchmark Study 2021-2022, we expect to see even more powerful data points on the digital transformation and the effect it has had on the performance and impact of programs around the world. As we prepare for the sixth edition of the WBS, this article will deep-dive into the importance of digital services to business incubators and accelerators.

The pandemic impact

If all had been normal, 2020 would have been a World Benchmark Study year for the UBI Global Community. However, as we all know, 2020 was a year like no other with disruption to the way global citizens work, live, and innovate. The team at UBI Global noticed some data points in the fifth edition of the World Benchmark Study for 2019-2020 that made us pause.

Enrollment

An excerpt from the World Benchmark Study 2019-2020:

TYPE OF ENROLLMENT

The industry is dominated by physical rather than virtual offerings. The vast majority of client startup teams receive most services on-site rather than offsite (e.g. through webinars or in chat rooms). In fact, 32% of all programs deliver all core services to client startups on location and only 4% deliver such services exclusively on a virtual basis. However, many programs have developed supplementary virtual and digital services to overcome limitations on physical space, resources, and personnel and to cater to increasing client and alumni startup demand for remote support.

When highlighting the trend of digital services and virtual enrollment, the World Benchmark Study 2019-2020 had this forward-looking best practice to share:

As remote work is becoming more mainstream, programs that are capable of location-agnostic service delivery will be better prepared for the future.

From 2019 onward, the Triumph of Innovation study’s look at enrollment types highlighted that physical enrollment shrank dramatically, going from 76% physical enrollment to just 42% over the pandemic period. This was emphasized during the personal interviews conducted as part of the study, underscoring that virtual enrollment of startups is not just a trend but is the new normal and will continue to grow.

Services

Services provided by business incubators and accelerators to their client startups are used to assess the comprehensiveness of the program’s support as part of the World Benchmark Study. Known as KPI number 7 (of 21), services provided, on average, stood at 11 per program while the global top average programs provided 14. This is a key best practice; providing a health portfolio of services in tune with startup needs.

Read more about the sixth edition of the World Benchmark Study 2021-2022, open for applications now with data surveys released at the end of April 2022!

At its most basic level, the main goals of business incubators and accelerators can be categorized as:

     >> Startup survival

     >> Employment growth

     >> Funds raised

While incubators nurture disruptive ideas with the goal of building a business model and company, business accelerators encourage young companies to grow and mature into businesses. For more industry terms and definitions, see The Innovation Landscape from A to Z – A Glossary by UBI Global.

Services provided can be in the form of direct support, with the goal of improving startup outcomes. On the other hand, services can also be identified as indirect, or those that seek to educate and change behavior. Some examples are:

Direct services

     >> Funding

     >> Access to workspace

     >> Legal and operational assistance

     >> Corporate matching

Indirect services

     >> Training

     >> Mentoring

     >> Networking

     >> Alumni support

     >> Peer collaboration

Obviously of key importance to startups, business incubator and accelerator service portfolios could have taken a hit during the global pandemic. But that wasn’t the case, as shown by the Triumph of Innovation study, which showed that:

Services

As a measure of the resilience of (business incubators and accelerators), very few services were withdrawn in response to the pandemic. Services that were withdrawn, including those described as ‘other’, cited health and safety considerations as the reason. The chart below shows the services programs kept active during the pandemic as well as those that programs ceased to offer.

In the true spirit of innovation, business incubators and accelerators used the increased familiarity with technology to their advantage. Some used it for increasing their reach in terms of enrolling startups while others used the increase in virtual communication to recruit domain-specific experts from all over the globe to enhance their service portfolios with world-class mentors, coaches, funding, sponsors, and more.

Data-driven

By participating in the World Benchmark Study in 2021-2022, your program gains valuable data-driven insights to optimize your program design. Additionally, your program’s impact on the ecosystem, your enrolled startups, and the future of the program itself is an amazing deep dive into your efficiency and effectiveness. Your participation is very important, as it helps the UBI Global research team provide a clear picture of the global innovation ecosystem to others around the world seeking innovation intelligence.

Find out why benchmarking the performance and impact of your business incubator or accelerator is more critical to success than ever

One of the core assumptions of a benchmark is that most of the components of the analysis remain constant for comparison’s sake. As the Triumph of Innovation study uncovered, however, innovation during the pandemic grew and, in many cases, outperformed pre-pandemic metrics in several key areas. The World Benchmark Study 2021-2022 is extremely important to business incubators and accelerators post-pandemic, join us as we explain why.

Performance monitoring is now more important than ever

Whether you have participated in previous editions of the World Benchmark Study or not, examining impact and performance data helps your business incubator or accelerator stay on top of the latest trends and serves as a monitoring tool for future benchmarks. By participating in the World Benchmark Study 2021-2022, you will gain a deeper understanding of which metrics have changed the most post-pandemic and where there are opportunities for improvement. This is UBI Global’s sixth edition of the World Benchmark Study for 2021-2022, and it will be even more valuable to past participants while providing newbie benchmarkers the chance to shine among their peers.

Learn new segments of importance for startups

As the Triumph of Innovation report highlighted, business incubators and accelerators developed a technology-focused business model to meet the needs of their enrolled startup companies during the pandemic. These shifts included everything from online events, digital enrollment, virtual support attraction, and new sustainability initiatives, to name a few. Participating in the World Benchmark Study 2021-2022 will help support business incubators and accelerators to understand their program’s post-pandemic recovery as they learn new best practices and important information to develop today’s most successful startups.

Highlight your importance

As a result of the pandemic, there has been an explosion of new startup companies. These young companies are developing mind-blowing new technology and innovation to meet new challenges faced by almost every industry in every country in the world. Along with this increase in new startup companies came a new generation of support programs, whether it was working space, laboratory facilities, funding, or fast-tracked corporate scaleup initiatives. As a result, it is essential to analyze the changes in business incubators and accelerators post-pandemic to examine how their dynamic has changed. Business incubators and accelerators provide critical support that is shown to reduce the failure rate of startup companies, and the World Benchmark Study 2021-2022 demonstrates the impact and performance of the participating programs on global entrepreneurship efforts.

Look ahead, stay ahead

As a business incubator or accelerator, your effectiveness in gauging industry recovery will become next-level when you participate in the World Benchmark Study 2021-2022. The benchmark process gives you a clear understanding of your program’s actual impact and performance post-pandemic. The data you provide for the World Benchmark Study 2021-2022 will tell a future-forward story that your business incubator or accelerator will refer to when conducting planning sessions on budgets, enrollment, onboarding, service map strategies, and more.

Smarter together

Business incubators and accelerators have a mission to support entrepreneurs, and as a global force for innovation, they have triumphed over a global pandemic by increasing performance. In times of crisis, business incubators and accelerators have proven to be sustainable resources for entrepreneurs, themselves, and the wider community of innovation. The World Benchmark Study 2021-2022, which will lead to the release of the World Rankings 2021-2022, and culminate with the World Incubation Summit serves to bring our community together to connect, benchmark, learn and recognize excellence to advance startup and innovation growth worldwide.

Here is some news to get excited about! The UBI Global team has been hard at work this year to conceptualize, develop, and produce a new, modular hub of tools for our community. The planned release is set for October, and we can’t wait for you to take Global Innovation Studios for a spin.

Meet the studios

UBI Global has created Global Innovation Studios, the future insights, best practices, corporate matching platform for startup programs globally. Global Innovation Studios is a hub of tools and services designed for business incubators and accelerators. Our eight years of knowledge and experience have led us here. We’ve learned from the five (six in 2022) iterations of the World Benchmark Study, countless micro- and macro-studies of innovation, and forming collaborations between the world’s largest corporations and you and your startups and developed a whole new set of tools. We can’t wait for you to continue the journey with us.

What’s next?

After UBI Connect closes on August 23, expect to hear more from us via email and our social media channels on the next steps to start using the Global Innovation Studios hub for business incubators and accelerators. Meanwhile, we have a study to conduct and Expo2020 Dubai to attend! Learn more about those activities below, and feel free to ask us any questions you have about UBI Connect, Global Innovation Studios, and our next innovation adventure together.
